Having been brought up within walking distance of the now "Trojan Horse" schools in Birmingham adjudged by Ofsted as in Special Measures, my ears pricked up.
Michael Gove insisted all schools must inculcate "British Values". But what are they?
PM David Cameron is quoted as saying, "I would say freedom, tolerance, respect for the rule of law, belief in personal and social responsibility and respect for British institutions - those are the sorts of things that I would hope would be inculcated into the curriculum in any school in Britain whether it was a private school, state school, faith-based school, free school, academy or anything else."
I can go with all of those. Can he?
An Asian Heritage lady on TV suggests these are Western, "Enlightenment" driven concepts. I'm familiar with those concepts. Voltaire got a mention.
But I could on! Please do!
As a Yorkshire born man (Nordic influenced?) with 3 Scottish grandparents, brought up in Brum, living here in Lancashire for 2/3rds of my life, what are our norms?
I'd thought today of catholic priests telling folk how, what to believe. We have a substantial Muslim community here in Lancashire as well as in Brum. My friends who are Islamic tell me about the love, respect & peace promulgated by Islam.
Just like English Crusaders, & our 18th century colonialists, "we" had our "ways".
But, hang on, I have "our" right of the freedom of speech to say these things, we defend those rights. Not all do. I cherish them.
I'm agnostic, that's my choice.
What are "British Values"? Do we all appreciate, uphold them?
How can this be resolved?
