EAST Lancashire’s hospital trust has been at the centre of relentless criticism in recent months. The Keogh Report saw the trust, which runs Blackburn and Burnley’s hospitals, placed in special measures before a further report highlighted failings in emergency care at Royal Blackburn.

Individual patients have come forward with stories of sub-standard care and many are taking legal action.

With all this background, it is easy to forget the tireless shifts being put in every day at the trust, in wards and offices, where lives are saved, new lives begin and patients are treated by dedicated staff.

One such case centres on the family of Jordan James McCormack, who have nothing but praise and gratitude for the ‘love and the best care imaginable’ given to their son.

Tiny Jordan was born four months early, weighing just 1lb 6oz, and his parents were warned to prepare for the worst.

But medical staff never gave up and it is thanks to the specialist neo-natal unit at Burnley General that Jordan is getting stronger day by day.

Obviously, the failings must be addressed and standards must be improved as quickly as possible – but praise must also be given where it is due.
