CRIES of ‘penny for the Guy’ and children rattling buckets full of sweets are what makes Bonfire Night and Hallowe'en special generation after generation.

It’s a chance for families to dress up, spend time together and enjoy some old-fashioned fun and games, often during half-term.

Each year seems to bring more events, decorations and ideas, although we are still some way from the celebrations seen in America.

But it can also be a period where our more vulnerable residents worry about unwanted tricks and misused fireworks.

Lancashire Constabulary acknowledges that anti-social behaviour rises during the week and fire crews will be braced for a flurry of calls.

In response, the police will start a week-long crackdown today, targeting people who take ‘tricks’ too far and put themselves or others at risk.

Dozens of organised, professional firework events are taking place across East Lancashire over the next few days and trick or treating can be enjoyed without inciting fear.

No-one wants to be the killjoy of good old family fun – but the most important thing is that everyone enjoys themselves safely.
