JUST three days after the launch of the Lancashire Telegraph’s ‘20 is Plenty’ campaign it’s marvellous to be able to report a real success.

On Monday we revealed that East Lancashire was one of the worst areas in the entire UK for child road injuries and called for all of our residential streets to become 20mph zones to cut the accident toll.

Lancashire County Council’s own programme to introduce such zones had been stalled after Labour took control from the Conservatives following the May elections.

Now council leader Jenny Mein, who had been ‘reviewing’ the evidence, has approved the roll-out of 20mph limits across the rest of the authority’s area by the end of the year.

The decision will affect Hyndburn, Burnley, Pendle, Rossendale and the Ribble Valley.

But Blackburn with Darwen Council, which has the highest figure for children killed or injured on its roads, still has to bring in this road safety policy.

Implementing the principles of ‘Slower Speeds, Safer Children’ is not about politics – it is about saving the lives of youngsters.
