THE Government has been accused by opponents of targeting the most vulnerable in society when making cuts.
And the news that a new ‘bedroom tax’ on people living in social housing is to be introduced is a further blow to the poorest people in society.
The most galling thing about the bedroom tax is that the government will decide if you are living in a home that is too big for your family - and cut your benefits accordingly.
The idea that a family will be told that their two children cannot have separate bedrooms because it doesn’t fit the criteria seems draconian in the extreme.
Also in many cases the people do not have that muchy choice in where they live.
Locally this proposal has been met with horror.
Of course people should not be paid benefits that they are not entitled to.
And people should not be able to play the system to their advantage.
But there could be 14,000 families in Lancashire worse off because of these cuts.
The Government tries to portray those on benefits as people who want something for nothing. But so many who rely on Housing Benefit are not scroungers, simply people who need support.
This is a one-size fits all policy which will hit those in Lancashire who can ill afford it.
