This was the scene on the A65 last night as heavy rain caused localised flooding south of Kirkby Lonsdale.

Chris Hoyle, who took the striking photo, said 200 yards of road, near to the Thornton-in-Lonsdale turning, was flooded with about a foot of rain.

Chris, who lives in Kirkby Lonsdale, added: “I’ve lived here for over 30 years and I have never seen the A65 completely flooded before.”

Over 2cm of rain had fallen in South Cumbria the previous 24 hours and the Met Office predicts further downpours today.

There is a low risk of more flooding over the next few days, according to the Environment Agency.
