A CARAVAN left behind on council-owned rugby fields by travellers was torched.
A passing police patrol spotted the fire off Oak Street, Whitworth, at 5.30am on Saturday.
A spokesman for Bacup Fire Station said: “It had been abandoned and wrecked down to the chassis by the fire.
"We are treating it as suspicious because there is no obvious source of ignition.
“It will cost the council a lot of money to recover it, repair the playing fields and pick up all the rubbish.”
The group of travellers had been illegally camping on the pitch for two weeks.
