AN INDIAN restaurant could steam into Summerseat if plans are approved.
Mala Cuisine has submitted plans to transform an engine shed in Rowlands Road into an historical dining experience.
The grade-two listed building is located in a conservation area next to Summerseat railway station and is associated with the Lancashire cotton trade.
But owners of ‘The Mala’ restaurant in Holcombe Village want to create a unique railway-themed Indian restaurant, which features archival material to provide a glimpse of local history for diners.
Under the plans, PPY Design would retain the original building features and stone flagged floor, and develop vehicle access and a car park.
A spokesperson said: “The idea is to keep the history of it.
"Links with the railway would be sought, such as advertising in the East Lancashire Railway literature, encouraging passengers to break their journey at Summerseat station and enjoy a meal at the engine shed.”
An old timber crane in the building would remain safe as an exhibition for customers with more railway paraphernalia expected to be introduced.
The site formed part of the Bury to Rawtenstall railway line in the 19th century but is currently used as an engineering business, dealing with the repair or motors and engines.
Planning bosses are due to make a decision in March.
