A COUNCIL has withdrawn its offer to provide 50 per cent of the cash needed to repair a wall after waiting seven years for residents to stump up the rest.
The wall at Hightown, Whitewell Bottom, collapsed in February 2000 and Rossendale Council spent £13,500 dealing with the immediate danger.
In August 2001 the council agreed to repair the wall if residents provided 50 per cent of the total cost, estimated to be about £16,000.
However an agreement has not been reached with residents and as the council has no obligation to repair the wall, it has now withdrawn the offer.
Coun Brian Essex, portfolio holder for a well managed council, said: "It goes without saying that we all have every sympathy with the residents but we sought to help with 50 per cent but residents have not been forthcoming with their contribution."
