FOOD lovers have been given permission to open up a new base in Summerseat.
Mala Cuisine plans to transform the Grade II listed building, at The Engine Shed, in Rowlands Road, into a restaurant.
The firm got Bury Council’s permission to do so in 2009, but work did not start within the three-year time limit.
Mala persuaded the council to extend that limit until 2015 and, at a Bury planning committee meeting, the company got permission to alter the plan. The main difference is that the latest plan factors in a mezzanine floor, which will make the restaurant bigger than it would have been.
Coun Dorothy Gunther objected, along with a resident of Crag Avenue. They claimed the site was unsuitable for activities that involve the public as the access is ‘extremely dangerous’.
They also expressed concerns about road safety, and possible noise and smells.
In a report to the committee, planning officer Helen Longworth said she had no concerns about access, and that fumes would be dispersed away from houses.
