A MEMORIAL event for a teenager killed in a car crash has raised more than £2,000 towards an award set up in his name.

Adam Madden, of Heald Lane, in Weir, was just 18 when he died after his car crashed into a truck in Bacup Road, Cliviger, on March 8 last year.

He was on his way to work at Dunbia’s Butchery Academy, in Sawley, where he was an apprentice.

The academy has since set up an award to be given out annually to its most impressive young butcher.

Adam’s mum, Mandy, said she was overwhelmed by the support she received at the event, at Bacup Hub, on Saturday night.

More than 250 of Adam’s family and friends turned up to celebrate his life, a year and a day after his death.

Miss Madden said: “It was a really great night. A lot of Adam’s school friends, and a lot of our family friends, attended and everyone was re-living stories of Adam’s life.

“At first count we’ve raised around £2,000 from ticket sales and raffles, but we’re still hoping to add more to that. It was sad on the one hand, but it’s good that he’s being remembered too”.

Adam was due to start his NVQ course, alongside 11 colleagues, on the day of the accident. The first award in his name was presented to Jamie Denson, 19, at a ceremony at The Stirk House Hotel, Gisburn, in December.
