A WOMAN is fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by a car near Whitworth yesterday.
Market Street was closed in both directions for more than four hours after the pedestrian was hit by a Toyota Corolla at around 7.10am.
Two crews from the North West Ambulance Service were called to the scene.
Officers from Lancashire Police and Greater Manchester Police put road blocks in place as the town centre was cut off for most of the morning.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said a woman had been taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with ‘very serious’ head and arm injuries.
The woman was found lying in the road after being struck near Oak Street in Shawforth.
Police said she was in her mid-60s and was breathing and concious at the scene. She was taken to Blackburn to undergo emergency surgery yesterday afternoon.
The driver of the car did stop and his details have been taken by police, who are continuing to investigate the incident.
