A LIFELONG Burnley fan walked 40 miles across Lancashire but had enough energy at the end of it to score a penalty at his beloved Turf Moor.

Alan Greenfield raised almost £500 for The Christie Hospital, Manchester, and the Pat Seed cancer appeal in Garstang.

And he fulfilled an ambition by celebrating a goal at the home of the Clarets, with a little help from manager Steve Cotterill.

The 58-year-old dedicated the mammoth trek to young Tom Smith, 14, of Forrest Beck, Bolton-by-Bowland, who died recently after a three-year battle against a brain tumour.

He said: "I did the walk soon after young Tom's funeral.

"All the money is going towards buying scanners and other pieces of equipment.

"I dedicated the walk to his family. Unfortunately the equipment won't help him but hopefully the money raised will help other people."

Tom, who was in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, was a keen swimmer and a pupil at Bowland High School.

He underwent surgery to remove the tumour and started playing football after completing a course of radiotherapy.

Alan began his journey in Blackburn.

Originally from Burnley, Alan now lives in Bolton-le-Sands near Lancaster, but his lifelong ambition has always been to score a goal at Turf Moor after supporting the Clarets for more than 50 years.

And when he arrived at the club to see Steve Cotterill make the draw for a raffle for all the sponsors, the Clarets boss made it possible for Alan to achieve his dream.
