AN EAST Lancashire college is at the centre of a nationwide competition to provide children's TV show Blue Peter with a new version of its signature tune.

After stumbling across the college's website, Blue Peter producers decided Stonyhurst College, Hurst Green, should be the setting for the contest.

The show has thrown down the gauntlet to children aged up to 15 who can play instruments or who love music to re-record the Barnacle Bill tune.

Auditions will be held across the UK in March and a shortlist of 40 will descend on Stonyhurst College the following month for a four-day residential camp and recording session with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

A film crew from Blue Peter, including presenter Zoe Salmon, have already been to the college for a promotional clip, and the first broadcast went out last night.

College admissions and marketing manager Jonathan Hewat said: "We have been chosen for our inspirational setting and inspirational facilities, including our old Jacobean dining room and refectory and our large orchestra room."

The 40 young musicians will work with top TV composer and arranger Murray Gold.
