THREE people have been badly injured in a head on collision between two cars on the notorious A59.
Tuesday’s head on smash at Gisburn is one of three accidents to have happened on the A59 in the past week.
A 42-year-old man was seriously injured at Sawley on Friday when his Citreon Saxo collided with a wagon on the A59.
And a Mercedes Sprinter van over turned at Sawley early this morning. Police said the driver was not badly hurt.
Following the accidents road safety campaigners have stepped up their calls for immediate action to be taken on the infamous stretch of road, with Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans saying “enough is enough.”
The sickening toll of death and serious injury on the A59 in Lancashire has seen eight people killed and hundreds hurt in the past three years.
Police said Tuesday’s accident involved a Saab and Vauxhall Corsa just outside Gisburn on the Skipton side.
A woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s, who were both travelling in the Vauxhall, are both in a serious but stable condition in the Royal Blackburn Hospital following the collision at 11.50am.
PC John Wharton, of Eastern Road Polcing Unit, said: “This was an extremely serious incident and I would urge any one who witnessed it to get in touch as soon as possible.”
It is understood that the man fractured his back, while the woman fractured her sternum.
The female driver of the Saab, also in her 70s, suffered minor injuries and was later discharged from hospital.
Mr Evans said: “Enough was enough years ago.
“How many people will have to die on this stretch for changes to be made and for the authorities to realise that things need changing.
“The Government is earning enough money from speed cameras and that cash should be pumped back into road safety, not more cameras.# “I will be writing to police to about this issue.”
Any one who saw the accidents should ring Blackburn Police on 01254 51212.
