FIREFIGHTERS were called into action after a blaze started in a chip pan.

They were called to Belfield Road, in Accrington, after being alerted that a smoke alarm was sounding at around 9.20pm on Friday.

When they arrived, a 70-year-old man, who had been cooking, was inside.

Watch manager Lee Cook said he was unharmed, but suffering from confusion.

He said: “He was fine, but he was a bit disorientated with the alarm sounding.”

Mr Cook also warned against using chip pans.

He said: “I would say not to use them and to get a deep fat fryer instead because they are a safer option.

“If you do use a chip pan, never leave it unattended.”

No damage was caused to the man’s house and he had managed to removed the pan from the heat before fire took hold.
