PEOPLE are invited to attend a candlelit commemoration of those who fell in the First World War in Whitworth on Monday, August 4.

The event at the Memorial Gardens in Facit is part of the national Lights Out collective recognition of the people who lost their lives during the First World War.

In addition to the commemoration between 10pm and 11pm, residents are being encouraged to pay individual tribute by leaving a candle in a window, or leaving a light on for the hour.

Karen Douglas, town clerk, said: “The town council has been keen to mark the centenary, not least because a number of young men from the Whitworth area were sadly lost during The Great War.

“Poppy seeds have been planted throughout the town by the community, and Lights Out provides an imaginative and one-off opportunity for the town council to bring the community together in a collective reflection, remembering those that were lost from our town.”
