EAST Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is considering hiring another consultant to lead the chronic pain service.
It follows concerns about a backlog of patients waiting to be seen.
The service has consistently failed to meet a key waiting time target in recent months, with just 63 per cent of patients seen within 18 weeks in May, compared to the target which was set of 90 per cent.
And ear, nose and throat consultants have been asked to take on extra work to clear a backlog of patients waiting for surgery.
According to board papers published by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, just 82 per cent of non-urgent patients within the ENT speciality were treated within 18 weeks in May, against the target of 90 per cent.
