A CAR park is set to be created on vacant land in Bankhouse Road, Nelson, after houses in the area were demolished.

Pendle Council recently acquired and demolished house numbers 49 to 57 as part of regeneration plans.

Tony Brown, from Pendle Council’s property management arm Liberata, said in a report to councillors: “The land lies adjacent to Maria’s Cash and Carry at the junction of Bankhouse Road and Regent Street, close to the Bradley Road nursery and the fire station.

“Members may be aware that there is a shortage of off-street parking outside the Cash and Carry premises and within the immediate area.

“The provision of a high- quality car park scheme on this prominent site would alleviate many of the current problems in terms of highway’s safety.

“A budget has not been identified for the council to carry out the construction works or to fund future maintenance costs.

“Two separate expressions of interest have been received from the adjacent businesses to acquire the land and offering to construct the car parks to a standard to be agreed with the council.”
