A NEW boiler is set to be installed on the site of one of Burnley’s original ‘super’ schools - after technical difficulties were encountered. Support staff at The Rose special school, in Greenock Street, have had problems with their biomass boiler, which was originally fuelled by wood chips. Smaller chips, in the form of matchsticks, were trialled but not found to be effective, and pellets were also problematic, causing internal jams when they became too moist. The boiler is set to be replaced by a ‘silo’ style pellet system, which will be higher at 5.5 metres tall but still be located beside the sports hall.
