Morrisons has made an important change to its Christmas gift wrap range.
The supermarket has completely removed all plastic from its Christmas gift wrap and accessory ranges, removing 3.1 tonnes of plastic shrink wrap from its wrapping paper alone.
This move is in addition to the removal of glitter and plastic from paper wrap, crackers and cards in recent years, reducing plastic in its range by more than 150 tonnes in the last three years.
Customers will notice that Morrisons has removed all plastic film and plastic shrink wrap from its wrapping paper plus accessories like gift bags and tags this festive season.
Instead, gift bags will comprise of recycled paper and the once-plastic ribbon handles will be replaced with either a paper twist or paper braid alternative.
Morrisons is also launching a fully recyclable sticky tape to help its customers and to make disposing of gift wrap easier.
The new sticky tape will mean that customers will no longer have to remove it before placing it in curbside collections or contaminating the paper recycling stream with bits of plastic.
It doesn’t stop there though as the supermarket has also halved the price of its Christmas gift wrap in comparison to last year’s prices.

In 2021, gift wrap was available to customers for £2 but this year they can pick it up for 99p with the supermarket hoping to give customers an incentive to shop eco-friendly this Christmas.
Morrisons cuts prices of Christmas gift wrap ranges for 2022
Here are the price cuts being made to Morrisons’ Christmas gift wrap ranges this year.
- Wrapping Paper – was £2, now 99p
- Bottle Gift Bag – was £1.25, now £1
- Small Gift Bag – was £1.25, now 65p
- Medium Gift Bag – was £2, now 80p
- Large Gift Bag – was £2.50, now £1
- Extra Large Gift Bag – was £3, now £1.50
- Sticky tape (red, silver and kids) – New this year and will cost £1
Jodie Mackrill, Buying Manager for Christmas and Events at Morrisons, said: “We are always looking to find ways to reduce and remove plastic packaging across all of the products we sell. It’s what our customers tell us they want too.
“During the Christmas period, 269,423 miles of wrapping paper are used every year, contributing to plastic ending up in landfill. Our new entirely plastic-free Christmas wrap and gift range means customers can have a more sustainable Christmas and we hope that cutting costs on gift bags and wrapping paper will help them in that.”

The new gift wrap range supports Morrisons’ target to reduce plastic packaging by 50% and to make all own brand plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
