Your report (‘Cut parking fees to save jobs’, LT, February 9) of comments suggesting that the amount the council receives in parking charges is equivalent to the amount raised in Council Tax each year was incorrect.
Our parking income is around £1.5m per annum, 0.37% of our total gross revenue budget.
Council Tax charges equate to more than £50m per annum – significantly more.
For the last two years, we have frozen our town centre parking charges and at the same time we have invested heavily in our town centre to reverse its decline and create new job opportunities.
The £66m Mall Extension, the £8m new market, investment in new public realm along King William Street and the forthcoming £30m Cathedral Quarter development, are all examples of our absolute commitment to sustaining future town centre vitality. Coun Kate Hollern, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.
