IT is appalling that some pensioners have had their podiatry footcare on the NHS stopped.
Elderly people more than anyone suffer with foot problems.
I know a person who cannot cut his own nails and is also diabetic.
Having worked in nursing for many years, I know how important it is for diabetics to take care of their feet.
I have seen a letter given to a patient who has had their foot care cancelled.
It says:
1) get a member of your family to cut your nails (not a good thing if you are diabetic).
2) see a chiropodist (or words to that effect – ie pay for private treatment).
I can only see in the future many foot problems, some serious, some undetected because of lack of professional care.
In the long run this will cost the NHS a lot more than the £63,000 they are hoping to save by these cuts.
