WhilE there are problems due to people dressed as Nazis during the East Lancs Railway 1940s War Weekend, mention either of the two world wars and within seconds the name ‘Germany’ comes up.
I well understand David Harris (editor, Jewish Telegraph) and his comments but while the Jewish people will never be able to lift the dark cloud of the Nazi treatment during (and before) the war from their history, others are in danger of forgetting just what happened in places like Auschwitz.
A few weeks ago, my hairdresser, who is in his early 30s, asked me my holiday plans.
I said ‘Poland’ and then remarked about Auschwitz. He admitted to having no idea about the place.
Indeed, after I gave him a short history, he then said, ‘Were there many Jews killed there?’ He had no idea at all.
If we all do a Basil Fawlty and ‘don’t mention the war’, are we not in danger of having more people growing up like this hairdresser?
