I’m not aware of Bolton having had a VC but during a chance conversation with Prince Philip, he wondered if Korean War hero Sgt Speakman was related to me.
Sgt Speakman, then a private, single-handedly kept the enemy at bay, for which he received the first VC presented by the Queen.
Sgt Speakman was from Altrincham. Do readers have any history of this man?
Also, the messenger of the Blackburn TSB was awarded the Victoria Cross. TSB in Blackburn is in Lord Street West and he was a true gentleman who used to deliver the post to premises of solicitors etc.
With his homburg and long greatcoat, he cut a fine figure.
This would be 1947 to 1956. Does anyone have any information on this man?
R Speakman (Mr), Chorley New Road, Bolton.
