I WOULD like to comment on the letter from Mr Tony Blackburn (Opinion, February 2) about the lack of access to Alum Scar.
I spent my childhood around countryside which included Alum Scar and I too have happy memories of playing without anyone bothering us.
Footpaths were well worn with plenty of use, but today, through lack of use, they are disappearing and, as Mr Blackburn pointed out, being fenced off.
The Labour Government allowed the sale of Rigg Wood in the Lake District which was popular with walkers and picnickers, to a timber company. It is now locked and gated. This will be more widespread if this government goes ahead with the break-up of the Forestry Commission.
What a sad loss to all the nature lovers.
PETER RYAN, Blackburn Road, Darwen.
