Regarding the enforced six-day trading at Accrington market hall, surely anyone can see that some of the traders need a day to re-stock and most certainly need one day of rest per week.
It is quite obvious that there is insufficient trading for the hall to be open six days a week.
The market traders would tell everyone that even the run-up to Christmas, when they are open for longer periods, does not generate more trade.
Market traders have been told that if they do not sign the lease by September 30, they will have to leave.
Some will be leaving after trading there for 30 to 50 years.
These are the very stalls where Accrington people have shopped for many years and this is what is keeping Accrington market up and running.
We keep being told there are traders waiting, indeed queuing, to take stalls in the market.
Where are they all?
Recently, several more children’s rides and some gaming machines were placed in an open space in the hall.
I presume that was to make the hall look busier; in fact it looked a mess and out of place apart from the photo kiosk.
In fact, this could even act as a deterrent to young mothers with small children.
A lot of money has been spent on restoring Accrington market hall.
It is a beautiful building.
Please don’t spoil it – make some wise decisions as to its future.
We do need new life and different retail outlets but this can only be done by attracting new business offering those stalls at an affordable price.
This is a transitional period, considering the traders and also the shoppers, who are mainly getting on in years.
