LIB DEM councillor David Foster says that Jack Straw was elected on a manifesto which argued for proportional representation (LT, September 22). He wasn’t!
Coun Foster makes the schoolboy error in assuming that the alternative vote system of voting is proportional representation. It is not and never has been.
Indeed, the outcome of elections held under the AV system can be less proportional than ‘first-past-the-post’.
The Lib Dems have argued for many, many years in favour of proportional representation, yet have betrayed their voters by now arguing for the non proportional AV System.
Nationally, the Lib Dems entered the Coalition with the Tories on the basis that the Tories had the most seats and votes.
Yet locally, they entered a coalition with the party (the Tories) that had the second most seats and votes.
No wonder they are in disarray both locally and nationally!
Coun DAVE SMITH (Sunnyhurst Ward), Blackburn with Darwen.
