The suggestion from certain parts of the media that Alec Ferguson should be considered as a possible successor to Fabio Cappello when his tenure ends as England manager is ridiculous.

A number of issues contributed to our elimination from the World Cup including team spirit, selection, tactics et al but I blame Mr Ferguson as the chief architect of our downfall.

Make no mistake about it Wayne Rooney after a terrific season at Man Utd was our talisman and without his goals we were destined to under achieve.

What did Sir Alec do? He played him at the latter end of the season in the Premiership and Champions League when he was transparently unfit. His performances were listless.

Sir Alec is a passionate Scot and whilst no-one can argue he is the most successful British manager should his name emerge as a contender, I suggest the FA remember this treachery.
