Rev Kevin Logan’s connection between humanism, abortion and animal rights, Logan’s Saturday Sermon (LT, June 5) puzzled me.
Humanism may deny the biblical teaching that God created man in His image; but was the Rev Logan’s casual mention of animal rights and the inference that human life is different from animal life supportive or dismissive of the cause to relieve animal suffering and abuse?
Whatever ‘in the image of God’ may mean, and the postulation that animals do not share this elevated state, does not obviate the future suffering and abuse of animals at the hands of man (after all, we are all animals – we all suffer physical, mental and emotional pain and distress).
Christianity needs to recognise that peace and freedom is the divine right of all creatures and although this may seem ideological, it is nevertheless true. This is a serious concern and careless, almost dismissive, treatment of it in an otherwise worthy article, written by a high profile Christian, is unhelpful and misleading to this cause.
