I refer to an article in last Saturday’s edition of the newspaper which related to the proposed siting of a waste plant within the Blackburn with Darwen area.
Within the article in question is a reference to comments reportedly made by Councillor Alan Cottam when, in an apparent attempt to allay the fears of residents who may be affected by the proposal, he makes reference to living within walking distance of an incinerator, namely Pleasington Crematorium.
Whilst I readily accept that from a technical point he may be correct, I find it hard to believe that his comments will find favour with the many families whose loved ones have passed through Pleasington Crematorium over the years.
To imply that the service which this facility provides is on a par with the disposal of household waste is something which I would not expect to hear from the most insensitive member of the community, let alone a councillor of Mr Cottam’s apparent standing.
In the circumstances, I feel that it is incumbent upon Coun Cottam to put forward a sincere apology without delay.
If he does not, then he will give the distinct impression that whilst he is happy to accept the authority which his position gives him, he is unwilling to accept the responsibility which comes with it.
MIKE CROASDALE Hob Green, Mellor.
