THE plans for Shuttleworth College (Padiham's new secondary school) have now been published.

This school, built in the green belt 30-odd years ago, needs replacing and Friends of the Earth are delighted plans include windturbines and solar panels to provide "green energy".

It will be built in the "footprint" of the original building, taking up no more woodlands.

But we wonder why other schools aren't getting green energy.

Gales howl across the projected site for Hameldon College and Lower Towneley playing fields has always been a draughty spot.

There is the matter of losing some trees to create a secure car park.

Would it not be even more secure if built under the school?

The path from the gate of the present school to Stocksbridge Lodge does not seem, from the plans, to be affected by fencing round the school.

I hope this will be the case. It would be a pity for Padiham people to lose this pleasant traffic-free way.

Plans for the school can be seen at the planning office on Palmer Lane, Burnley or on www.lancsdevelopments.com.

If you have any comments, they can be sent to LCC Environment Directorate, Guild House, PO Box 9, Cross Street, Preston.

Meanwhile, what exactly are the county council's plans for the Kiddrow Lane site?
