I read with interest last week that the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee has recommended pensioners who pay 40 per cent tax should be denied winter fuel allowance.
I agree with this and it should be applied to people receiving family allowance on the same tax bracket.
But – and a big but – pensioners whose income is more than £9,490 should be taxed 20 per cent. I disagree. MPs have enjoyed free gas and electricity in their second homes courtesy of the taxpayers.
MPs say the proposals would save £250 million a year.
What is the next money saving move on OAPs who have worked all their lives and paid into the system?
