THE report, ‘Free grave repairs snub a disgrace’ (LT, June 4), causes me further concern.
Following my protests in the LT dated August 2005 and November 2007, BwD Council continues to drag its heels.
I wish to point out that following the inspection and testing by BwD Council, appointed ‘experts’, graves in Pleasington Cemetery are not the only ones in need of repair.
Many memorials in Darwen’s Old Cemetery are victims of the health and safety check and still beg for attention.
Two memorials, however, have been more fortunate. One of the local military heroes was made good by the owner of Darwen Memorials free of charge (LT, October 2007).
The other being that of a Labour MP was made good by cash provided by BwD Council, (Blackburn Citizen, June 2006).
Presently, BwD Council has been given the opportunity to get a large quantity of memorials repaired at no further cost to the taxpayer but continues to sit on the fence.
My suggestion to BwD Council is to accept this offer and then use the £50,000 that will be saved by not doing a ‘builder style’ repair (LT, June 2009) to finance the resurface of many streets in Darwen that I see becoming worse by the day.
