THE LT’s ‘Quick fix – Your DIY queries answered’ November) suggests that readers should ‘check their home’s airbricks’ as obstructions ‘can cause major problems – primarily rot in wooden floors’.
May I point out that the government-led promotion and funding of cavity wall insulation is duping homeowners into the assumption that this type of insulation will save money.
In fact it is very likely to cause so much damage to property that any proposed ‘energy’ savings will become insignificant in comparison to the cost of rectifying properties subjected to such schemes.
It is not just ‘wooden floors’ that may become affected, but also damp ingress to the interior, causing numerous and widespread ‘damp patches’.
And the retention of moisture within the cavity held artificially by the insulation will ultimately lead to the deterioration and destruction of the brickwork, both internal and externally.
It matters little whether homeowners pay for this ‘service’ or it is paid for via grants.
It does matter, however, that homeowners are being misled by this concept in the name of becoming more ‘environmentally friendly’ and with the promise of saving on ‘energy bills’.
It also matters that the government are plying this scheme to vulnerable, impressionable and un-informed homeowners.
