I AM writing to correct a statement (LT Nov 21) regarding the treatment of unsafe gravestones in Burnley Cemeteries. The council’s Labour Group leader, Coun Julie Cooper, stated she would like to see the council or the government giving assistance to people who cannot pay for the repairs.
I can confirm that the council does provide assistance to grave owners who are eligible for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit by contributing the labour costs of re-fixing memorials to the approved standard. The owner only then has to make a small contribution towards the costs of the materials.
This was agreed by the council’s executive in May 2008.
Coun Charles Bullas, Executive member for leisure and culture
