RE the recent story Don't forget mill memorial referring to Belgrave Mills, Darwen.
Thank you again, for publicising the matter which I, former Darrener, consider important from a historical point of view.
Not many current Darwen residents will be aware of difficulties experienced by workers when the town, like others, suffered the dire effects of the cotton famine in the 19th century.
Potters, the original proprietors of Belgrave Mills, by their benevolence, alleviated much hardship. The Potter family and their associates, the Huntingtons, were outstanding in their generosity.
Yes, it is history now, but it is history which deserves recognition in this 21st century. The fact many Darwen families provided several generations of employees at Belgrave Mills is worthy of record.
Belgrave "Mill" is mentioned. It ought to be "mills." During its history of over 170 years, the several mills involved were roofed over, making the mills one factory.
