I REFER to the article (LT, January 10) re Hameldon so-called College.

I have voiced and written my objections to Schools for the Future on a number of occasions, ever since the idiotic idea was mooted.

The entire concept was nothing but an effort in social engineering, aimed at racial integration in secondary education.

This was engendered by the report on racial disturbances in Burnley.

There is absolutely no sound educational or logistical reasoning behind the proposal.

Unfortunately, the powers-that-be in Preston in their misplaced zeal, grabbed the opportunity to reorganise secondary education in the area, especially considering the financial backing offered.

There was little doubt secondary education could be improved, including the fabric of some schools, but remember that different schools had already achieved specialist status. The ensuing shambles is there to see, not only in the precipitate amalgamating of schools, but for example, the arguments about location of the new schools, eg the purloining of Bent Head and Lower Towneley.

The reluctance of pupils from different schools to be integrated, not to mention the loss of specialist status.

However, apart from this, the basic facts are that the whole process was ridiculous, big schools are not better educationally and the logistical chaos is already beginning.
