RAISING the learner driver' age to 18 may contribute to lessening carnage on the roads but I don't believe it will be as effective as preventing those who should not be driving through enforcement of current legislation.
Our current laws need to be rigorously enforced.
Statistics show the number of uninsured, previously banned or unlicensed foreign drivers or drivers under the influence of drink and/or drugs on our roads is staggeringly high.
Practically everyone can recount a horror story of an accident resulting in injury or death where the driver should not have been on the road.
There's enough smart' technology nowadays that could prevent banned, unlicensed or uninsured drivers being in control of a vehicle.
Whether the driver is 17 or 77, if they can't drive responsibly they should be denied access to driving by the most rigorous means.
If they then choose to defeat these measures they should be locked up for a length of time befitting the resultant crime.
