WITH Christmas over and the sales in full swing, many families in East Lancashire will be worrying about how they are going to make ends meet. Extra expenses could break the bank for those already struggling with debt.

A family on average income spends £564 on trimmings such as food, drink and decorations - and that figure does not even include any presents.

Debt accrued during the festive period can mean families have to make difficult choices such as not eating or having the power cut off when the January bills arrive, but this doesn't have to be the case.

Getting help with claiming the right benefits and professional help planning finances can help avoid becoming one of more than 6.6 million people already behind on payments.

Legal aid pays for a free helpline, Community Legal Advice (0845 345 4 345), where advisers can help people create a budget to pay for Christmas and plan debt repayments. They can also advise people on eligibility for tax credits or benefits.

I would urge anyone who is worrying about the cost of Christmas to contact the helpline, or visit our website: www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk now.
