I am profoundly disappointed that SUSTRANS won the £50million Lottery bid.
Why? Well SUSTRANS is a quango. It was set up in John Prescott's heyday, and at the last count was gobbling up 90 million pounds a year of our taxes.
It said in this paper that among other things, some of the 50 million will be used to put Cycle paths etc, along redundant railway lines. In this, case Rosegrove to Padiham.
This sounds great. The problem is that once a project is finished, SUSTRANS washes its hands of it, and when it comes to maintain-ing the Walk/Cycle Way etc, the local council/taxpayer has to pick up the tab.
This quango was responsible for spending hundreds of thousands of pounds, implementing the ridiculous, WALKING TO SCHOOL IS COOL scheme whose signs infest our streets.
Many of the signs are now illegible, damaged, beyond repair, or missing. SUSTRANS also imposed a Cycleway through a non-cycling park.
When it was found that a bridge over which the C/way crossed needed repair, did they help towards the cost? No, they did not.
Perhaps, when all the extra costs are added to council bills over the next decade, those who rushed to vote might realise what a costly mistake they made.
