FOR several months, concerned grave owners have been awaiting a response from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council re the recent health and safety issue applicable to all headstones.
A meeting was held at the cemetery which resulted in the work being suspended pending an investigation and the promise of a second meeting being called when the investigation had been completed. There are enough people able and willing to substantiate my advice.
There have been letters printed in the LT and in addition, Councillor Brian Gordon has taken our concerns to various officers of the council. Has he been ignored?
Coun Alan Cottam has shown very little interest in the concerns raised, but when the BBC comes to town, he is readily available for comment. He declared that each grave is privately owned. On that basis why have grave owners not been notified when it has been found that their headstone has been found to be in a dangerous condition?
It appears that the way Blackburn with Darwen Council have chosen to deal with the issue is by letting owners find out for themselves whenever their next visit to the grave might be.
Grave owners were promised a second public meeting once an investigation had took place. I now challenge Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to honour their advice and arrange for this second public meeting to be arranged, provide a suitable venue, give notice via this newspaper for concerned grave owners to attend and provide answers to questions that have for far too long been ignored.
MRS M WHALLEY, Alpine Grove, Blackburn.
