I WOULD be very interested to know where Sir Bill Taylor obtained the following information - "And of course, the 3,000,000-strong Indian army in the Second World War was the largest volunteer army ever assembled" (Letters LT, November 16).
The information I have is this.
In the Second World War the revived Indian Army reached its highest point of efficiency and success, without conscription, two and a half million men came to the colours, it was the largest voluntary army ever raised (page 13, A Matter of Honour), an account of the indian Army, its officers and men, by Philip Mason. First published 1974.
