MANY people feel frustrated when they see pictures of crowded schools in Africa without tables or books or paper.
But there is an even more pressing need that cameras don't show - the need for well-trained and motivated teachers.
The level of teacher training in some African countries means although teachers know their subjects well, they don't have good techniques to teach them.
Teachers from Britain are helping change this. Working with international development charity VSO, British teachers are supporting African colleagues to introduce new ways of teaching, so teachers are better trained, more motivated, and able to run lessons students really enjoy.
VSO can offer British teachers the chance to make a real difference in Africa and Asia, and have a positive impact on their own careers.
New research shows teachers who've done VSO return to the UK more motivated and better teachers themselves.
Even if you can't volunteer as a qualified teacher you can support VSO and British teachers who are making a real difference to children in the developing world.
