THE report on unsafe headstones at Pleasington Cemetery (LT, August 28) gives cause for concern.
Mr Brent Stevenson of Brent Stevenson Memorials, is reported to have said: "It's ironic that the main problem is in the cement joint at the bottom of the headstone failing.
"This was supplied by the cemetery but wasn't deep enough and didn't have enough bonding."
If Mr Stevenson is correct then why is it the responsibility of the grave owner to repair?
If the basic cement joint was supplied by the cemetery as part of the package when a grave plot was purchased and then proved to be in a dangerous condition, having been subjected to a topple testing' exercise, again by the council, then exactly who is responsible for the repair?
This is one question I have pt to my ward councillor for him to investigate and clarify.
If the fault does lie with the poor quality of materials used by the cemetery then surely each grave owner has the right to instruct a monumental mason to repair the damage, and then submit the invoice to the council for a full reimbursement.
