AT the beginning of July a placard was placed at the corner of my street stating that work would commence on July 9.

I listened for the dreaded sound of pneumatic drilling and the thump of piledrivers, but the most amazing picture of serenity emerged for a whole month.

Then on August 8 came a procession of vans dropping equipment off.

Then, asleep in bed at 2.30am, August 9, crash, bang, wallop, almost under the bedroom window, metal piping crashing to the floor, lights flashing, voices giving orders!

Since then we have had absolutely no action whatsoever. So I conclude that work will begin about September 9 in order to redress the balance. Oh for the old days of efficiency and punctuality.
