REGARDING the letter published last week from Mrs Denise Davies, I wish to put her right about a couple of points she raised.

Firstly, it was Conservative County Councillor Mike Calvert who attempted to score political points against a Labour Party activist in his letter of May 25.

Coun Calvert wrote: "Would Mr Sheraton also wish me to ban fume-belching 4 x 4 gas-guzzlers from parking in Emmott Lane outside the school? If so, will he be selling his?"

In response I wrote: "Laneshaw-bridge is largely a rural farming area and until alternatively powered vehicles become readily available, I am sure such vehicles are essential for many parents who must get their children to school safely, although I suppose car sharing could be a limited option for some close neighbours."

Secondly, the Labour Party knows where Laneshawbridge is with several party members living there. Mr Alan Sheraton is currently the Boulsworth branch delegate to Pendle Constituency Labour Party.

Finally, Mrs Davies missed the main point of my letter. If Coun Calvert is concerned about global warming (as his concern about "gas guzzlers" implied) then he should ask his Conservative Party why they are so against the European Union's Carbon Emissions (greenhouse gases) trading regime?

This will ensure the expense of clean-up technology will go to where it is the most cost effective.

The Conservative Party cannot make a meaningful contribution to fighting climate change while they maintain their present Euro-sceptic stance.

DAVID FOAT, Pendle CLP Hon Secretary.
