WITH every year that goes by, our roads get more and more congested.
In tandem with that, accident figures remain deeply worrying — particularly among the under-25s.
We live on a small island and we cannot keep building roads across our beautiful countryside. No wonder that environmentalists are forever urging us to use public transport or to get on our bikes.
Full marks to cycle-training firm Go Velo, based in Trawden, for its initiative to teach more adults how to ride a bike and how to stay safe.
The scheme is aimed at people who have never ridden a bike and those who are technically proficient but need to be educated on road safety and all that entails.
Let us hope the scheme bears fruit and we get more adults on the roads.
In conjunction with schemes like this, perhaps the county council can further improve the provision of cycle lanes across Lancashire.
Too many of our roads are far too inhospitable. A narrow cycle lane on a major artery with cars and lorries thundering past will never be an attractive prospect for most of us. But the Go Velo team seems to have got the right gear with this scheme.
