IT IS a sad sign of the times that in 2015 parking wardens in East Lancashire have to protect themselves from attacks with body cameras.
All of Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen officers now have access to recording equipment as the number of wardens abused in the streets increases.
Motorists need to remember that these people are just doing a job.
No one should have to expect going to work and being abused.
The cameras – funded out of public money – have cost other local authorities around £600 per device.
Data from the cameras is stored securely and is available for review for a short period before being deleted.
Blackburn with Darwen, said each of the borough’s 16 wardens received around two or three verbal and physical assaults every day.
The digital devices allow officers to capture the attacks on video, before sending it to police to be used in potential prosecutions.
The move has been understated as a “worrying sign of the times” by MPs.
Surely drivers should be able to have enough self restraint not to abuse wardens for doing what they are paid to do.
So come on East Lancashire let’s stamp out this abuse.
