AFTER almost four weeks of evidence and stressful cross-examination for William Roache and his accusers, the actor has finally been acquitted of all charges against him.

He was the latest in a line of celebrities to face court in recent months.

Co-star Michael Le Vell and former Street actor Andrew Lancel were both accused of offences and found not guilty following trials last year.

These were all serious allegations and were only taken before a judge after the police and CPS decided there was sufficient evidence to justify a realistic prospect of conviction.

It is the very essence of the British justice system that a 12-person jury hears and considers all the evidence presented by both the prosecution and defence.

It means anyone harbouring a historic or more current sex offence allegation must not be put off coming forward.

Even though Mr Roache is innocent, there are many other perpetrators out there with victims living with the consequences of their crimes.

These people must not be deterred from bringing their complaints to police who have given a powerful message that they ‘remain committed’ to such investigations.
